Leone Galbaio (752-22 April 773) was a scion of the House of Galbaio and the son of Doge Maurizio of Venice.
Biography[]
Leone was born in 752 to Doge Maurizio of Venice, and he was from the House of Galbaio. Leone was his second child, with his older brother destined to become Doge Giovanni of Venice. Maurizio raised the two of them well, and although Leone was known to be a cynical person, he was honest. He married Alessandra Galbaio, a courtier in the Republic of Venice, in 769 and had a child with her, Dora Galbaio. In 770, his brother appointed him as the Steward of the House of Galbaio, and he managed the treasury.
In April 773, Anastasia Orsoleo plotted against him, possibly at the behest of her husband Pietro Orsoleo (the son of the late Doge Teodato of Venice, whom Giovanni had assassinated). Anastasia fled into exile at the court of Count Euphemio of Arborea when Giovanni ordered for her arrest, but on 22 April 773 Leone died under suspicious circumstances at the age of 21. His murder sent shockwaves through Venice as Giovanni sought to punish those responsible.
