
Leoncio Prado Gutierrez (25 August 1853-15 July 1883) was a Peruvian colonel during the War of the Pacific. The son and brother of two presidents, his death at the Battle of Huamachucho made him a national hero.
Biography[]
Leoncio Prado Gutierrez was born in Huanuco, Peru on 25 August 1853, the son of President Mariano Ignacio Prado and the older brother of Manuel Prado Ugarteche (born six years after Prado's death), who would also become president. He served in the army from a young age, and he fought against Spain in the Chincha Islands conflict of the 1860s before becoming a general. On 15 July 1883, he was killed at the Battle of Huamachuco, the last major battle of the war.
