Biography[]

Leon Febres Cordero was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1931. He was educated in America before working in agribusiness, and he was elected President of Ecuador in 1984 as the candidate of the Social Christian Party of Ecuador. He promoted conservative economic reforms unpopular amongst most Ecuadorians, and, as an ally of President Ronald Reagan, he oversaw a series of human rights violations as part of his crackdown on the guerrilla group ¡Alfaro Vive, Carajo!. After leaving office, he served as Mayor of Guayaquil from 1992 to 2000, lifting the city from years of mismanagement, corruption, and paternalist practices by the populist Bucaram family. He died in 2008.
