Leon Chase "Red" Phillips (9 December 1890-27 March 1958) was the Democratic Governor of Oklahoma from 9 January 1939 to 11 January 1943, succeeding E.W. Marland and preceding Robert S. Kerr.

Biography[]

Leon Chase Phillips was born in Grant City, Missouri in 1890, and he was raised in Foss, Oklahoma before serving in the US Army during World War I. After the war, he practiced law in Okemah and served in the state house from 1933 to 1938 and as Governor from 1939 to 1943. He was twice acquitted of accepting bribes, and he oversaw deep budget cuts which failed to balance the budget; Phillips opposed the New Deal. He died in 1958.
