Leofwine was born on 20 July 744 to a family of Catholic Anglo-Saxons, and he rose to become the captain of White Company, a band of mercenaries that fought in various wars across Europe. In 774 Doge Giovanni of Venice paid a considerable amount of money to enlist the White Company's services during his war for the city of Trieste against the Lombards.
