Leo VI of Byzantium

Leo VI "the Wise" of Byzantium (19 September 866-11 May 912) was the emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 886 to 912, succeeding Basil I of Byzantium and preceding Alexander of Byzantium.

Biography[]

Leo was born to the House of Makedon, a Greek Orthodox Christian dynasty that ruled the Byzantine Empire for 200 years. Leo succeeded his father Emperor Basil I of Byzantium on his death in 886 at the age of 20, and he continued his wars with the First Bulgarian Empire and the Abbasid Caliphate. Leo suffered several defeats during his reign, and in 911 he had to sign a peace treaty with the Kievan Rus after they betrayed his bribe in exchange for peace. When he died, his brother Alexander of Byzantium succeeded him.
