Lega Lombarda (LL) is, along with Liga Veneta, one of the two largest components of the national Lega Nord party. Lega Lombarda was founded by Umberto Bossi on 12 April 1984, and it was named for the Lombard League of the Middle Ages. From 1989 to 1990, the LL federated the northern regionalist parties, and it merged into Lega Nord in February 1991. The party, which enjoyed widespread support in Lombardy due to its advocacy for Lombard nationalism, became one of the largest sections of Lega Nord. Its heartland was in the northern and mountain provinces of Lombardy.
