The Left Party (V) is a socialist political party in Sweden that was founded in 1917 as a splintergroup from the Swedish Social Democratic Party, with its original name being the Social Democratic Left Party. The Left Party became the Communist Party of Sweden in 1921 after its communist views caused it to leave the socialist party, but it was renamed to the Left Party - Communists in 1967 before adopting the name Left Party in 1990. The Left Party was one of many European communist parties to split from the existing Marxist socialist parties on the orders of the Comintern, as the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin called on communist parties to form across the world with the goal of world revolution. The party opposed privatizations, supported Swedish membership in the Non-Aligned Movement, opposed membership in the European Union, and advocated increased public expenditure, and it supported social democratic governments. However, it was never a part of government at the national level. In 2017, the party held 21/349 Rikstag seats, 1/20 European Parliament seats, 116/1,597 county council seats, and 750/12,780 municipal council seats.
