Lee Johansen (1867-) was an American bounty hunter of Norwegian heritage who was active in Texas during the Wild West era.
Biography[]
Lee Johansen was born in Texas in 1867 to a Norwegian immigrant family from Korshamn, Agder. He became a bounty hunter and tracker by profession, working with US Marshal Tom Davies to hunt down dangerous criminals during the last years of the Wild West era. In 1898, he was contracted to help Davies hunt down Alfredo Montez, leader of the Del Lobo Gang, and Johansen led Davies' associates Clara Blaycock and the Arizona Kid from Manzanita Post to the Aurora Basin to track down Montez. After a shootout at Swadbass Point, they killed the Del Lobos' leader and Johansen severed his head for proof, but, upon returning to Davies at Manzanita Post, Davies identified the head as that of Alfredo's brother Jorge Montez instead. As a result, Davies paid the bounty hunters a smaller reward, although he insisted that he was being generous because they had still killed a leader of the gang.
