The Lebanese Internal Security Forces (ISF) are the national police and security force of Lebanon, founded in 1860 as the gendarmerie. By 2013, there were 40,000 personnel employed by the ISF, and they were employed in the 2007 Fatah al-Islam and Jund al-Sham insurgency and the spillover of the Syrian Civil War in Lebanon, fighting mostly against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front in the main cities.
