The League of Three Emperors was an alliance that existed in the 1870s and 1880s between the German Empire, the Russian Empire, and Austria-Hungary. It was created by Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in order to prevent the two other powers from allying France and using their combined strength to destroy Germany. The alliance of the Kaiser of Germany, the Tsar of Russia, and the Kaiser of Austria also defended the three countries' interests in Europe and resolved disputes between the latter two in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. The agreement eventually fell apart due to disagreements in the Balkans between Russia and Austria, although a Reassurance Treaty was signed by Germany and Russia in 1887.
