Le Marais is a historic district in north-east Paris, France. The district was once the aristocratic district, and it had many buildings of historic and architectural importance. During the late 18th century, the district was no longer the most fashionable district for the nobility, falling into disrepair after the French Revolution. The nobility completely abandoned Le Marais, which would become a popular and active commercial area. The district became a center of Paris' Jewish community, and it also became a center of gay culture after the 1980s.
