Lazio is a region of central Italy, home to the capital city of Rome. The region is second in both population and economy size out of all of the Italian regions, with a population of 5,891,582 people in 2015 and a GDP of 170,000,000,000 euros. Lazio's name comes from the region of Latium and the Latin Kingdom, which once ruled the region; the Tiber River once divided the regions of Lazio and Etruria. Today, it is literally the center of Italy, being home to the capital, a large population, and a large economy.
