Laufey Profile

Laufey (sometimes known as Nál) was, in Norse mythology, a Jötunn of Jotunheim and the mother of the trickster god Loki. She bore Loki, Byleistr, and Helblindi by the jötunn Fárbauti. Her name is often understood to mean "leafy" or "leaf-island". She is most frequently reference in the name of her son Loki, who goes by the matronymic Laufeyson, rather than the expected traditional patronymic Fárbautason; This is variously understood to represent his nature as a trickster or Laufey's nobility being recognised by the Æsir, perhaps due to her descent from them.

Her position as mother of Loki situates her at the root of several major mythic lineages and conflicts between the inhabitants of Jotunheim and the gods of Asgard.
