Latium is the region of central western Italy which was home to the Latins and the Romans. During the 13th century BC, the Trojan refugees under Aeneas married with the Latins and created a new people, the Romans, who founded Rome in 753 BC. Rome became the most powerful of the 12 Latin city-states by the 6th century BC, and it went on to annex its neighbors in the Latin War, which ended in 338 BC. Latium became known as Lazio in the Italian language, and it is famous for being the birthplace of the Latin language and Roman culture.
