Larry James Allen (17 March 1926 - 9 June 1944) was a US Army private who served in the US 101st Airborne Division during World War II.
Biography[]
Larry Allen was born in Hartford, Connecticut on 17 March 1926, and he enlisted in the US Army right out of high school rather than wait to be drafted. He became close friends with Michael Garnett, and the two of them both shared a love for Superman comics and were known for their sly and sarcastic remarks. The two soldiers were sent to serve in the US 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment of the US 101st Airborne Division, and they took part in the Mission Albany landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944. Allen and Garnett landed together, and they later linked up with Staff Sergeant Greg Hassay's squad. Allen and Garnett would later develop a rivalry with Batman fan Kevin Leggett, whom they would have to serve under during the Battle of Saint-Come-du-Mont on 9 June 1944. During the battle, Leggett and Garnett got into a verbal and physical fight, attracting the attention of three German soldiers. Garnett was killed by a sniper, while Allen was mortally wounded. He angrily shot a surrendering German soldier in revenge for Garnett's death, and he apologized to Leggett before he died of his wounds.
