Larbi al-Hamza was a Berber porter who lived in Melilla, Spain during the 1920s. In July 1921, he helped Duchess María del Carmen Angoloti y Mesa's Red Cross nurses board a military vehicle with their belongings, and, in the process, he instantly fell in love with the nurse Magdalena Medina, who acted awkardly around him due to their mutual physical attraction.
