Land and Liberty was a major narodnik organization that was formed in 1876 as a major populist organization. Under the auspices of Land and Liberty, radicals went into the coutnryside and attempted to organize the peasants against the Russian Empire as a revolutionary force, but the uneducated Russian peasants often betrayed the radicals to the police and failed to respond to their calls. In 1879, Land and Liberty split into Narodnaya Volya and Black Repartition.
