Lake Copais was a lake in central Boeotia, Greece, located west of Thebes. The Ancient Greek poleis of Haliartus, Orchomenus, and Thebes were located along the lake, and the city of Gla (then known as Arne) was situated on an island in the middle of the lake. According to Greek mythology, Heracles dug the lake and filled it with the water of the Cephissus River to prevent mounted Minyan warriors from pursuing him. During the Classical period, the lake was known for its fish and eels. The lake was drained in the late 19th century, and it became flat dry land known as the Kopaida.
