
Lajos Kossuth (19 September 1802-20 March 1894) was the Governor-President of Hungary from 14 April to 11 August 1849, preceding Artur Gorgey.
Biography[]
Lajos Kossuth was born on 19 September 1802 in Monok, Austrian Empire. He was initially a lawyer and steward, but he took part in nationalist politics and fought for freedom of press and freedom of speech in Hungary. Kossuth was imprisoned several times, and he entered the Diet of Hungary in 1847. On 14 April 1849, at the start of the Hungarian War of Independence, Kossuth became Governor-President of Hungary, having issued a declaration of independence that same day. Kossuth later moved to Edinburgh in Scotland, and he was known for his great speeches in England and the United States while in exile. He died in Turin, Italy in 1894 at the age of 91.
