Lai was a Chinese-American vigilante who, along with Ah Toy, fought against sex traffickers in San Francisco during the 1870s.

Lai was born in Yumingzui, Shandong, Qing China, and her father sold her to slavers to settle a debt. Brought to America by Zan Lim, she was sold to San Francisco brothel owner Ah Toy, who made a point of keeping her pure, and slashed Stephen Gresham and Russel Holbrook for attempting to violate her. Lai worked as a maid at the brothel before secretly training with Ah Toy's sword; Ah Toy saw use in Lai's great skill, and Lai became Ah Toy's companion in battling sex slavers in the city. She helped care for a wounded Ah Sahm after he was nearly killed in a fight with Li Yong, and, together with Ah Toy and Ah Sahm, she helped massacre the nativist Teddy Boys. Lai and Ah Sahm also killed several white slavers at a rival brothel before rescuing all of the Chinese sex slaves and taking them to Nellie Davenport's colony of freed Chinese sex slaves in Sonoma. While Lai wished to continue fighting alongside Ah Toy, Ah Toy figured that it would be best if Lai stayed with Davenport so that the killing would stop. The mute Lai protested by hopping on Ah Toy's wagon, but Ah Toy dragged the stubborn Lai out of the carriage and threatened to turn her into a prostitute if she returned to the brothel. A crying Lai attacked Ah Toy, who hugged her close before leaving her behind to start a new life. After Douglas Strickland III's henchmen burned the vineyard down, Ah Toy reluctantly invited Lai to serve as her bodyguard back in Chinatown.
