Nuestra Señora de La Paz is the seat of government of Bolivia and the country's third-most populous city. Located 42 miles southeast of Lake Titicaca in the Amazon basin, and surrounded by the high mountains of the Altiplano, La Paz was founded by the Spanish conquistador Alonso de Mendoza on 20 October 1548. The city was named in commemoration of the restoration of peace following Gonzalo Pizarro's rebellion in Peru. La Paz was the site of numerous revolts, including a six-month siege by Tupac Katari in 1781 and Pedro Domingo Murillo's revolution on 16 July 1809. In 1825, the Bolivian War of Independence came to a close, resulting in Upper Peru becoming independent as Bolivia, named for Simon Bolivar. La Paz became the seat of Bolivia's legislature in 1898 and is home to the Palacio Quemado, the country's presidential palace; however, Sucre retained the judicial power and served as the country's constitutinoal capital. Today, La Paz is home to the largest urban cable car network, as well as several markets, including a Witches' Market. In 2024, La Paz had 755,732 residents.
