Kyle Moore was an American soldier who served as a Major in the US Marine Corps during the Spanish-American War. He was rescued by Captain Eugene Choi while fighting the Spanish defenders of Cuba at the Battle of El Caney, but his hand wound prevented him from wielding a gun in battle. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt assigned the two men to serve on a diplomatic mission to Joseon, where they had the secret objective of assassinating the treacherous American expatriate Logan Taylor. Moore later assumed command of the American detachment sent to Korea to help Emperor Gojong of Korea enforce order following Taylor's assassination.
