Kydonia was an ancient Greek city-state on the northwest coast of the island of Crete. It was founded by King Cydon, the grandson of King Minos, and Aegina would send colonists to the Cretan city. In 429 BC, the city-state was attacked by Athens during the Peloponnesian War after Athens took Nikias from Gortyna for its alliance with Sparta. The city-state took part in wars with other Cretan city-states until 69 BC, when the Romans invaded Crete and conquered Kydonia. It went on to be a Roman and Byzantine city, and it is now known as Chania.
