Kure is a port and major shipbuilding city in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The Kure Naval District was established in 1889, and it became a center of steel production and shipbuilding as the home of the Kure Naval Arsenal, before being incorporated as a city on 1 October 1902. In 1940, the largest battleship ever built, the Yamato, was launched from Kure, and Kure served as the Imperial Japanese Navy's main shipbuilding base and arsenal during World War II. From June to July 1945, near the end of the war Kure suffered from sustained aerial bombardment by the United States. From February 1946 to 1952, Kure served as the headquarters of the British Army occupation force in Japan. Kure continued to be a maritime center into the 21st century, and it was home to Japan Marine United, JSDF naval forces, and the Yamato museum. By 2015, Kure had a population of 228,030 people.
