Kullervo Manner (12 October 1880-15 January 1939) was Prime Minister of the Finnish Socialist Workers' Republic from 29 January to 25 April 1918 and the leader of the Communist Party of Finland from 1920 to 1935.
Biography[]
Kullervo Manner was born in Kokemaki, Finland, Russian Empire in 1880, and he worked as a journalist for years, being jailed for criticizing Czar Nicholas II of Russia's government. In 1910, he was elected to Parliament as a Social Democratic Party of Finland member, and he served as Speaker of the Parliament and SDP leader from 1918 to 1919. During the Finnish Civil War, he was the Prime Minister of the Finnish Socialist Workers' Republic, and he was forced to flee to the Russian SFSR after the Reds lost the civil war. While he was in exile in Moscow, he founded the Communist Party of Finland, and he served as its leader from 1920 until he was purged in 1935. He died in a labor camp in 1939.
