Kristi Noem

Kristi Noem (30 November 1971-) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-SD) from 3 January 2011 to 3 January 2019 (succeeding Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and preceding Dusty Johnson) and Governor of South Dakota from 5 January 2019 (succeeding Dennis Daugaard).

Biography[]

Kristi Noem was born in Watertown, South Dakota in 1971, and she was raised on a Hamlin County ranch and farm. At age 22, she left college to help the family ranch after her father was killed in a machinery accident, and she expanded the family business. From 2007 to 2011, she served in the State House of Representatives, and she was then elected to the US House of Representatives in 2010. She held typical social conservative views as a Republican Party congresswoman. In 2018, she ran for Governor, winning with 51% of the vote. Noem abolished the permit requirement for "concealed carry", signed several abortion restriction bills, opposed Donald Trump's trade war with China because of its devastation of South Dakota's agricultural sector, passed anti-protest legislation in the aftermath of the anti-Keystone Pipeline protests, had a successful marijuana legalization amendment to the state constitution struck down as "unconstitutional", took a hands-off approach to her state's COVID-19 response, supported the "Big Lie" conspiracy theory surrounding Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election, and supported a ban on transgender participation in women's sports.
