Kovno Governorate was a governorate of the Russian Empire that existed from the annexation of Poland-Lithuania in 1795 until World War I in 1917, when Lithuania gained independence from the Soviet Union. The capital was the city of Kovno (Kaunas), and it had a population of 1,553,224 in 1897.
