The Korean People's Navy (KPN) is the navy of North Korea, founded on 5 June 1946. In the 1990s, it reached its peak of around 60,000 servicemen, and in 2016 it had 708 ships and 46,000 personnel. The KPN saw very little fighting in the Korean War, and most of its actions took place during the clashes with Japan, the United States, and South Korea in the Sea of Japan and Korean Sea from the 1950s onwards.
