Kondo Isami (9 October 1834 – 17 May 1868) was the Tokugawa Shogunate's chief-of-police, commanding the Shinsengumi from 1863 to 1868.
Biography[]
Kondo Isami was born on 9 October 1834 in Musashi Province, Japan, and he joined Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi's Roshigumi bodyguards. In 1863, he was made the commander of the Shinsengumi, the private police force of the Bakufu government of the Tokugawa Shogunate. In 1868, he led the shogunate's armies at the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma and the Battle of Nagareyama during the Boshin War; on 17 May 1868 he was executed by beheading for the murder of Sakamoto Ryoma.
