The Komalah (Society of Revolutionary Toilers of Iranian Kurdistan) is a secularist and communist revolutionary organization based in the Kurdistan regions of Iraq and Iran. Formed in 1969 in Slemani, Iraqi Kurdistan, Komalah's goal is to establish a left-wing independent Kurdish state in Iranian Kurdistan. After Ayatollah Khomeini's 1979 coup, the Komalah engaged in armed struggle against the Iranian government, as Khomeini had issued a jihad against the Kurds. Komalah is left-wing, advocating communism, socialism, feminism, and populism, and the group has fought for Kurdish freedom for decades.
