Koji Shindo (1971-2006) was a Japanese yakuza crime boss who served as patriarch of the Nishikiyama-gumi subsidiary of the Tojo-kai clan from 2005 to 2006, succeeding Akira Nishikiyama and preceding Tsuyoshi Kanda.
Biography[]
Koji Shindo was born in Tokyo, Japan, and he became a member of the Tojo-kai yakuza clan as a young man and rose in the ranks after the formation of the Nishikiyama-gumi in 1995; he became Captain of the Nishikiyama-gumi under Patriarch Akira Nishikiyama. Shindo was loyal to his boss during his power plays in 2005, leading an ambush on Kazuma Kiryu after Kiryu left a fruitless meeting with Nishikiyama at the Serena Executive Lounge bar in Kabukicho. Kiryu single-handedly knocked out Shindo and all of his henchmen in an alley fight, even as the yakuza henchmen wielding swords against Kiryu's bare fists. Shindo would go on to become patriarch of the Nishikiyama-gumi following Nishikiyama's death that same month.
In 2006, following the apparent assassination of Tojo-kai chairman Yukio Terada, Shindo followed in his late boss' footsteps by seeking to usurp control of the Tojo-kai, attempting to do so through trying to marry acting Tojo-kai chairwoman Yayoi Dojima (even sexually assaulting her on several occasions) and working with the Sengoku-gumi subsidiary of the rival Omi Alliance. Shindo refused to aid Kiryu in fighting off the Omi Alliance's invasion of Tokyo, and, after Shindo's ambitions and betrayal came to light, Kiryu fought Shindo in the Tojo-kai headquarters, and Kiryu twice defeated Shindo. Yayoi caught Shindo in the act and had him expelled from the Tojo-kai, causing Shindo to reach for a gun; however, Daigo Dojima outdrew Shindo and shot him dead.
