Kiyonari Naito was a loyal daimyo of Ieyasu Tokugawa. As one of the supporters of the first Shogun who had fought at the Battle of Komaki-Nagakute in 1584, he was given the Shinjuku gardens, which were ruled by his Naito clan for years to come.
