The Kitakata-gumi is a Japanese yakuza family based in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The family ran the city's entertainment district, Susukino, and the family's boss Daizo Kitakata was well-respected and was regularly invited to public events by the city's government and businessmen. In 1999, the Yawata-gumi of Aomori began to muscle in on the Kitakata-gumi's operations in Susukino, pressuring local businesses into paying them protection. The Kitakata-gumi, aided by Ryuji Goda of the Omi Alliance, drove out the Yawata-gumi invaders after a brief mob war. In 2012, however, Tojo-kai chairman Daigo Dojima attempted to create a nationwide alliance of yakuza organizations against the Omi Alliance in the case of open war between the two federations, and Dojima sent Goro Majima to Hokkaido to form an alliance with Kitakata. Omi Alliance chairman Tsubasa Kurosawa made plans to assassinate Majima, so Kitakata helped Majima fake his death so that Majima could go after Kurosawa. Majima's sworn brother Taiga Saejima escaped from prison on hearing of Majima's supposed death and kidnapped Kitakata during Sapporo's yearly Snow Festival before Kitakata revealed the true nature of Majima's "assassination". Kitakata was shot and wounded by Saejima's former cellmate Shigeki Baba, who was working for Kurosawa, but Kitakata soon made a full recovery, and the Kitakata-gumi, Tojo-kai, Yamagasa-gumi, and Watase-gumi joined forces and defeated the Kuroha-gumi in Tokyo, putting an end to Kurosawa's plot.
