Kishu Munehide portrait

Kishu Munehide (1832-April 1867) was a Japanese nobleman and daimyo of the Wakayama Domain of Kii Province during the late 19th century. Kishu sided with the pro-Shogunate faction during the Boshin War, and he allied himself with the powerful Nagoya Domain of southern Kansai. In 1866, he made peace with the Choshu Domain despite having a much larger and more powerful army to command. He went to war with Choshu the next year as part of a Shogunate counterattack against the increasingly powerful pro-Imperial cause, but he was killed at the Battle of Matsusaka, a major setback for his powerful domain.
