The Kingdom of the French (Royaume français) existed briefly as the constitutional monarchy of France from 1791 to 1792. The regime lasted for nearly a year before the National Constituent Assembly voted to abolish the monarchy completely, ending over two centuries of Bourbon rule over France. The kingdom was established by King Louis XVI of France after the Storming of the Bastille, with the French people demanding more involvement in the government. However, the King of France was kept in a virtual prison at Tuileries Palace in Paris, and he planned to escape to Varennes to meet up with the Austrians in 1792. When the French people discovered this, mobs of people stormed the Tuileries Palace and killed most of the Swiss Guard, capturing King Louis. The First French Republic was established after the storming of the palace, and the king and his wife would both be executed by guillotine in 1793 during the Reign of Terror.
