Flag of Sikkim

The Kingdom of Sikkim was an Indian kingdom that existed from 1642 to 1975. Sikkim, located in the Himalayas, had a history of warfare with Nepal; Sikkim allied with Great Britain against Nepal in 1814, and the Nepalese managed to overrun Sikkim before agreeing to cede Sikkim to British India as a part of the peace treaty. In 1861, Sikkim became a protectorate of the United Kingdom, and it then became a protectorate of India in 1950. In 1975, the Buddhist monarchy of Sikkim was accused of discriminating against Hindu Nepalis in the country, leading to the Indian Army invading Sikkim in April 1975, killing the palace guards at Gangtok, and disarming the palace. The people of Sikkim overwhelmingly voted to become an Indian state on 16 May 1975.
