The Kingdom of Navarre (824-1521) was a European monarchy in the Navarra region of northern Spain, bordering Bearn and Aragon. It split into Navarre-Bearn later in its history, and Navarre itself was conquered by Spain in 1521.
History[]
Navarre succeeded the Duchy of Vasconia in 824 as the Kingdom of Pamplona, named for its capital city. Navarre was in personal union with Castile or Aragon for most of its years, but it split into a new kingdom when Alfonso I of Aragon was slain in battle in 1134. Navarre's lands were chipped away repeatedly by the other kingdoms of Spain towards the end of the Reconquista, and although they won the 1507 Siege of Viana against Castile, Navarre was conquered by 1521. Northern Navarre became Navarre-Bearn, and the south remained in Spanish occupation and became the Navarra region. The title "King of Navarre" would later be used by the first monarchs of the French House of Navarre.
