The Kingdom of Montenegro was a monarchy in the Balkans region of southeastern Europe, present-day Montenegro, with Cetinje serving as its capital. The kingdom existed from 1910 to 1916, with Prince Nicholas I of Montenegro proclaiming the creation of a constitutional monarchy in Cetinje on 28 August 1910. Nicholas had modernized the country by adopting a constitution and a new currency, the perper, and he led Montenegro into the First Balkan War in 1912 with the goal of territorial gain. Instead, Montenegro lost the newly-captured city of Shkoder to Albania at the insistence of the Great Powers in May 1913. During the Second Balkan War that year, Montenegro sided with Serbia against Bulgaria. Montenegro's third and final war was World War I, during which the kingdom remained true to its alliance with Serbia by siding with the Triple Entente against the Central Powers. From 15 January 1916 to October 1918, Austria-Hungary occupied Montenegro, and the 20 July 1917 signing of the Corfu Declaration foreshadowed the union of Montenegro and Serbia. On 26 November 1918, the Podgorica Assembly deposed the exiled King Nicholas and announced a union with Serbia; the Kingdom of Serbia (now including Montenegro) would create the new Kingdom of Yugoslavia on 1 December 1918.
