Galicia

The Kingdom of Galicia was a kingdom in medieval Spain that existed from 409 to 1833, occupying the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. In 409, the Suebi king Hermaneric conquered Galicia from the Western Roman Empire and founded the city of Braga. Galicia was the first kingdom to officially adopt Catholicism as its religion, and in 449 it minted its own currency. From 585 to 711, Galicia was ruled by the Visigoths, and Galicia and Asturias would both be ruled by the Kingdom of Asturias of Pelayo's kin during the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. In the 8th century, Galicia became a part of Leon, and in 1230 it entered into union with Leon and Castile, remaining a part of a united Spain for hundreds of years with nominal independence. It would not be until 1833 that Galicia's regional assembly was dissolved and the crown of Galicia was united with the crown of Spain.
