The Kingdom of Bavaria was a German state that existed from 1805 to 1918, replacing the Electorate of Bavaria after the downfall of the Holy Roman Empire. The House of Wittelsbach independently ruled Bavaria from Munich until 1871, when Bavaria became a part of the German Empire. On 12 November 1918, King Ludwig III of Bavaria released all Bavarians from the service of the kingdom as the German Empire dissolved, and Bavaria would become a state of the new Weimar Republic.
