In 1836, Kiev had a population of 895,200 people, with 89.3% being Ukrainians, 7.5% Jews, and 2.5% Poles; 90% were Orthodox Christians, 7.5% Jews, and 2.5% Catholics. In 1915, the governorate had a population of 4,988,000 people, with 88% being Orthodox Christians, 10% Jews, and 2% Catholics. In 1906, landowners still controlled 41% of the land of the governorate. The governorate was dissolved when Ukraine gained independence after the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed in March 1918.
