Khuseyn Vakhaevich Gakayev (8 July 1970-24 January 2013) was a Caucasus Emirate commander during the Second Chechen War and the Insurgency in the North Caucasus.
Biography[]
Khuseyn Vakhaevich Gakayev was born in Kalinovskaya, Chechen-Ingush ASSR, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union in 1970, and he fought under Shamil Basayev during the First Chechen War. He later became a commander of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria during the Second Chechen War, and he joined the Caucasus Emirate during the Insurgency in the North Caucasus. After Dokka Umarov rescinded his resignation as President of Chechnya in 2007, Gakayev, Aslambek Vadalov, and Tarkhan Gaziyev refused to recognize him as Emir (also partly due to his authoritarian leadership and his abandonment of the nationalist cause in favor of pan-Islamism), but he continued to command the Eastern Sector of Vilayat Nokhchicho. On 24 January 2013, he was killed in a shootout at a well-camouflaged guerrilla base near Vedeno.
