Khasan Israilov

Khasan Israilov (1910-29 December 1944) was a leader of the Chechen Uprising of 1940-1944 during World War II.

Biography[]

Khasan Israilov was born in 1910 in Chechnya, Russian Empire to a family of Sunni Muslim Chechens. In 1919, he joined the Bolsheviks, but he eventually sought to fight for Chechen independence from the Soviet Union, becoming a journalist and poet. In 1940, Israilov led an insurgency in Chechnya against the Soviets at the same time as Nazi Germany's invasion of the Caucasus during World War II, and he was caught and executed by the NKVD in 1944 after his family had been deported along with hundreds of thousands of other Chechens.
