Khaled Hoblos was born to a Sunni Muslim family in Lebanon, and he was a local sheikh at the Harun al-Rashid mosque in Tripoli. Hoblos was a radical Sunni who encouraged sectarian violence against Alawites in the Jabal Mohsen neighborhood of Tripoli, and his words led to the Sunnis of Bab al-Tabbaneh rising up against the Lebanese Army during the spillover of the Syrian Civil War in Lebanon. In early April 2015 he was arrested for preaching his Salafist ideology, which had driven many Lebanese into joining terrorist groups like the Islamic State and al-Nusra Front.
