Khafra

Khafra (died 2532 BC) was Pharaoh of Egypt from 2558 BC to 2532 BC, succeeding Djedefre and preceding Menkaure. It was during his reign that the Great Sphinx of Giza was built in his honor.

Biography[]

Khafra was a son of Pharaoh Khufu and Queen Meritites I and the brother and successor of Djedefre. He had several wives and had at least 12 sons and 4 daughters with them, and he also built the second largest pyramid at Giza, as well as the Great Sphinx of Giza (which bears his likeness). He became known as a heretic and cruel tyrant, and the people of Egypt's suffering continued from Khufu's reign and into his son's reign; he kept the Egyptian temples closed after Khufu had sealed them. He died in 2532 BC.
