Ketill Flatnose

Ketill Flatnose (815-) was the Chief of Mann from 855 to 874, succeeding Merfyn ap Gwriad and preceding Ragnall ua Imair.

Biography[]

Ketill Flatnefr was born in Romsdal, Norway in 815, the son of Bjorn Grimsson. He became a Viking and, in 855, conquered the Isle of Mann, which he ruled as the "Chiefdom of Mann"; he became a vassal of Ivar the Boneless and the father-in-law of Halfdan Whiteshirt. Following Harald Fairhair's victory at the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872, many warriors fled Norway, invading the British Isles and threatening Ketill's domain. Ketill defeated them and conquered the Hebrides, and, after his death, much of his family migrated to Iceland.
