Flag of Kenya

Kenya is a country in Africa, located along the Equator in the East Africa region, with Nairobi as its capital. Kenya was first colonized by the German Empire in 1885, when the Sultan of Zanzibar accepted the protection of Germany. In 1890, after some border disputes, Germany agreed to give Kenya to the United Kingdom, and Kenya was a part of Britain until 12 December 1963. The British imported Indian indentured servants to help on plantations, modernized the region, and crushed the Mau Mau uprising of 1952-1959. The country became independent in 1963, with Jomo Kenyatta being its first president. Kenya had the largest GDP in East and Central Africa in 2006, with agriculture (especially coffee plantations) being the largest economic sector. In 2016, Kenya had a population of 46,661,552 people, with 83% being Christian, 11.2% Muslim, and 1.7% animist.
