Kenneth Thomas "Ken" Cuccinelli II (30 July 1968-) was Attorney General of Virginia (R) from 16 January 2010 to 11 January 2014 (succeeding Bill Mims and preceding Mark Herring) and Director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services from 10 June 2019 (succeeding Lee Cissna).
Biography[]
Kenneth Thomas Cuccinelli II was born in Edison, New Jersey on 30 July 1968 to a father of Italian descent and a mother of Irish descent. He became a lawyer in Virginia after graduating from George Mason University, having worked with feminists on campus to create a sexual assault education coordinator position after hearing a rape occur on campus. In August 2002, he was elected to the Virginia State Senate as a member of the Republican Party, and he had conservative positions on abortion, gay marriage, illegal immigration, taxes, government spending, property rights, and gun control, while he advocated for mental health spending and law enforcement. In 2010, he was elected Attorney General of Virginia, and he donated $100,000 to help homeless people acquire medical and mental health services. In 2013, he ran for Governor of Virginia against Democratic Party nominee Terry McAuliffe, losing with 45.2% of the vote to McAuliffe's 47.8%. He left the office of Attorney General in 2014. However, on 10 June 2019, Donald Trump appointed him acting Director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
