Kemal Pamuk

Kemal Pamuk (died 1913) was an Ottoman Turkish diplomat. He died of a heart attack while in the bedroom of British aristocracy Mary Crawley, causing a minor scandal.

Biography[]

Kemal Pamuk was born in Ottoman Anatolia, the son of a prominent minister. Pamuk received an English education, becoming fluent in the language and speaking with an upper-class English accent. Pamuk became a diplomat, serving at the Turkish embassy in the United Kingdom. In 1913, he was sent to London for a conference to create an independent Principality of Albania, and he was hosted by the British aristocrat Evelyn Napier until the start of the conference. Napier took Pamuk along when he was invited to visit Downton Abbey for a fox-hunting trip, and, while Napier sought to use this opportunity to flirt with Lady Mary Crawley, it was Pamuk who saduced her instead. When the footman Thomas Barrow flirted with Pamuk, Pamuk blackmailed him into leading him to Lady Crawley's bedroom that night, lest he expose Barrow's homosexuality. Kemal coerced Lady Crawley into intercourse with him, saying that, if she screamed or rang for someone, she would be scandalized. During their intercourse, Pamuk died of a heart attack, and Barrow discovered his body shortly after. The ensuing scandal harmed Mary's relationships with her family, including her fiance Sir Richard Carlisle and her cousin and love interest Matthew Crawley.
